Peers Outcomes

Learning Outcomes and Relevance.

In summary the needs and concerns of today's youth form the foundation of The Seven Principles of RESPECTisms and their outcomes. The principles of RESPECTisms play a major relevance to their everyday lives cover many of the major challenges young people today face during their teenage years and into adulthood

PEERS

Learning Outcomes:

  • Developing positive relationships
  • Resist negative peer pressure
  • Choose their friends carefully
  • Work better in a team

Relevance:

Young people take their cues from other young people. We did the same when we were teenagers and, if we look back, we may recall learning valuable lessons some good and some bad learnt from interacting with our peers and emulating them.

No experienced educator or parent ever underestimates the power of peers to influence young people's attitudes and behaviour, both in the classroom and outside it. Much has been written about peer influence, though it is not entirely a negative phenomenon. It often pivots on strong bonds of loyalty between young people, who offer each other mutual support as they beat a path through adolescence.

From interacting with peers, young people can learn many valuable lessons about the world and the range of experiences it offers. The flip side is that friends and classmates may exert strong pressure on others to conform to undesirable values and behaviours. Educators may face an uphill battle in countering negative attitudes to school attendance and achievement when the seemingly coolest kids in class are the rebels and under-achievers who disrupt lessons. The power of peer pressure is precisely that young people will over-ride what they know to be right in the context of group dynamics.
